I highly recommend, even if you aren’t the type of person to sit down and enjoy games like these, to at least try DnD once in your life, it can be a life changing experience for some, like it was for me. The sheer amount of creative freedom was an incredible outlet to let my emotions out and honestly helped me work through some things, even if I didn’t want to admit it, allowing me to push my internal struggles out in a fantasy environment, and learn to deal with them by playing a character who shared these similar emotions, and personality to myself, of course that’s not always how people HAVE to play a character, it can be completely unrelated, but often players find pieces of themselves in their characters
And the setting being most commonly a fantasy world? allows you to try so many things and simply experience a variety you can’t get in reality- it’s a form of escapism obviously, and it can be a bit of a dangerous habit if you completely absorb yourself in the game and neglect everything. But that’s why you never play alone, you’ll almost ALWAYS have someone there to help you out either in-game problem solving, or real-life friendships. It has led to me meeting people I wish to live the rest of my life with.
While yes, it’s often seen as something more commonly associated with the ‘Nerd’ stereotype, that doesn’t mean you have to be a nerd to enjoy it, I’ve met a bunch of people who tried it for the first time and were the farthest thing from a typical nerd but still loved the game and what they could do with it, which can open dialogue for people to try new things further down the road, leading to a more exciting and fulfilling life.
